Imagine This
03:10
|
|||
It’s back to me as a singular economy of
Words and phrases with no one to invest
And as the crows feet get wider and fly away
I’ve had the thought I’ve been caught past my best
Like oil paint flung aimless
All up and down the great white canvas
I could not have imagined this
I guess a new cycle can begin again and I can
Push more on the pile and fill the space that’s free
A drifting eye to throw the pin and plot the course this time
To cast aside and break off to the sea
Pulled and forced to find a source of emotional stenography
I could not have that this be me
In the evening all comes down
Imagine this here it is now
And when the feeling comes around again
Often around the week’s end
A big red sign that reads Welcome Overstayed
And under lock and key it finally is time for me
To find a different value for today
There are some days then others
That pull us tighter under covers
I would not see it go this way
And when the pinging of the phone becomes the only freedom
Echolocation in the light of day
And after late waking, sprinting to the starting line
To qualify to be part of the race
But one then another, the strange connections found in others
Throw ropes to those so out of place.
In the morning, look around
Imagine this here it is now
And in the mental space to now embrace no information
As well as in the hope of moments not yet seen
To be in forward-facing, grounded placement, drop the ball
I’ll see you all in 2017
Like oil paint brought aimless
All up and down the great blue canvas
I don’t know half of what it means

Forwards and Backwards
04:15
|
|||
Into the bruising, bluesing wild
Foraging finally to find my fire
Covered and smothered and smoke up lift
The endless night shift, and now it’s
Forwards and backwards in aimless rounds
Managing slightly with stakes in soft grounds
Binding myself to every breath
Fitting to what’s left
And the legacy of what it means to be okay falls away
And no presence last for all futures passed on the stay
Into the colors that cycling finds
Fortified red anger finds fortified red wines
Up from the table and back again
Off and on the mend
And it comforts me that there is a tree somewhere far away
That won’t sway by the emotional location of my day
Darkness and dawn, you, you’re on, it’s a thrill
Monsters will find you by luck or by skill
And to stay with it still and sway until they’re gone
Into the back with a stack of work
Heavy fluorescents and managers lurk
Punch through the clock for to grab the time
Force it back to its prime, and a short walk
Brings it back, put on Bowl of Plums
Latched to the swell of the troubadour’s strum
Simple and clean and connected sway
Before it falls away
And it comforts me that there is a tree somewhere far away
That won’t sway by the emotional location of my day

Porn and Pepto-Bismol
02:54
|
|||
Well it’s porn and Pepto-Bismol again
With some aspirin and a bottle of gin
Another notch on your bedpost is all that I’ve been
But if I squint I’ll see your smile in every cheerleader’s grin
I can’t stop adoring you, but you say I’m boring you
It’s porn and Pepto-Bismol again
Yeah it’s porn and Pepto-Bismol tonight
I search your name on every XXX site
I look for guys with my body, girls with your voice
But then it’s hard to find a scene
Where someone’s with me by choice
So I’ll drown your memory in my browser history
Cause it’s porn and Pepto-Bismol tonight
Well it’s porn and Pepto-Bismol for me
With your picture and a flat-screen TV
I called you each hour to wish you well
I drank up all the gin and now I’m sicker than hell
I tried to move on from you cause I’m too far gone for you
It’s porn and Pepto-Bismol for me
Yeah, it’s porn and Pepto-Bismol and Heineken
I called your mother and I asked where I could find you again
She said, “Nate, have you been drinking?”
I said, “What do you think?”
She said, “Goodbye”
And hung the phone up faster than I could blink
I know you need it better than me but baby remember me
It’s porn and Pepto-Bismol again

Play Me Off Slowly
05:05
|
|||
I can hear that old melody playing
That familiar and saccharine sound
It started with off the cuff comments
That you made when your friends came around
And all I want is one more evening
With you and a bottle of wine
So play me off slowly
Play me off slowly
Play me off slowly
Til the curtain comes down
It’s maudlin and cloying to live through
A story as old as it gets
Full of every cliché that I know of
Same old love mixed with lies and regret
And all I want is something different
Cause tragedies bore me to tears
So play me off slowly
Play me off slowly
Play me off slowly
Til the curtain comes down
I’ve been playing this set far too often
You know every bad joke and sad song
You still smile at all the right places
But I can tell you’re just playing along
And all I want is one more chance
To sweep you right off of your feet
So play me off slowly
Play me off slowly
Play me off slowly
Til the curtain comes down
There’s only so much I can beg for
Til there’s nothing of me left to give
And you’ve made it a point to be civil
So for once it’s on me to forgive
But all I want is one more blowout
With yelling and cursing and tears
So play me off slowly
Play me off slowly
Play me off slowly
Til the curtain comes down
It’s hard to ignore the crescendo
Or that far away look in your eyes
And it’s clear that we’re reaching the end so
Let’s bitterly bid our goodbyes
And all I want is one more verse
I guess a chorus will have to do
So play me off slowly
Play me off slowly
Play me off slowly
As the curtain comes down
